Members: Anna Lechner, Sara Kovačić, Marta Petak, Ema Galić
Project name: Dance marathon
Focus of the project: collect money for a humanitarian organization
Project duration: 2 hours
CAS strand(s): Creativity Activity Service
CAS Stages:
1. Investigation
Purpose and goals of the activity:
Our interest with this project was focused on helping someone through fun and socializing, which included all three CAS segments. Certainly the whole team of organizers loves good fun and music and are more than creative, and this resulted in the idea of a dance marathon that would provide participants to, trough dancing and having fun, help the chosen organization by the dance winners. Certainly, in terms of service, the money that would be collected in the form of registration fees from all participants would be allocated to a humanitarian organization or club, i.e. those who need it the most.
CAS Learning Outcomes I/we plan to achieve through this activity
LO 1. Identify my own strengths and develop areas for personal growth
Each of us had to identify our strengths when planning the project in order to distribute tasks more easily and so that in the end the project itself would turn out better.
LO 2. Demonstrate that I have undertaken challenges and developed new skills in the process
LO 3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Certainly, we all found ourselves in the new role of organizers where we had to gather strength and carefully plan everything in detail so that everything went according to plan. We had to brainstorm a lot to come up with the original idea.
LO 4. Show commitment to and perseverance in my CAS experiences
LO 5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Each of us is good at something else, one understands design, one music, the other business and communication, and when we united our abilities, we covered all important areas for our project to succeed, of course we had to work together and make compromises.
LO 7. Recognize and consider the ethics of my own choices and actions
We had to think carefully about how comfortable our participants would feel when completing the task and how much of the registration fee would be acceptable to the guests, given that more students than adults were expected. According to that assessment, we had to organize food and space, as well as a music playlist.
Values: this activity will help me become more/better
The CAS project has helped me become a better communicator the most. For our CAS project to be successful I had to communicate not only with my team but also with our mentor and people who attended our project. It has also made me more reflective. After the project I took some time to reflect upon it and analyse all the things that have gone as planned but also some of the mistakes we made along the way. Seeing and reflecting upon the mistakes we have made has definitely been hard but it will benefit me for some future projects of mine.

3. Action
Activity description:
First we had to organize the space where the dance would be held, we got in touch with the supervisor and made a deal about the date and time. Then, we had to make the invitations and share them on social media so as much people as possible would come. We later bought snacks and drinks for the people so the experience would be as enjoyable as possible. We also made a playlist with songs that would be danced to and played.
On the day of the dance, we had to come a little earlier to prepare the space and make more detailed preparation on hoe the dance and competition would be held. We prepared the food and drinks, the place where people would put their registration fees and donations.
We waited for all the people to gather and come and we first introduced them and let them talk and hang out a bit so they would all relax before the dance. After a while, the supervisor, who is also a dance teacher, started teaching the people the steps of the waltz. Through the experience, we made sure to take pictures to make this fun night a memory.
Step by step, everybody was learning and adapting to this challenge.
After the participants were sure that they have learned the steps, they tried to dance to a real song and practice. After a while of practice, when everybody agreed, the final round of the dance competition started. All the pairs had to dance the waltz until they gave up. And the last couple standing was free to choose the association that which the money would be donated. The pair that won the competition chose PK Vidra as the association we would donate the money.
After the competition ended, we cleaned the space up and thanked the supervisor and the participants.
Later that month, all of us girls that were organizing this event, visited PK Vidra and gave them the money to help their association and wished them all the best in further work.

4. Reflection: At first, when organizing the event, we were all very nervous and excited because we did not know how it would turn out. During the dance, it was really nice to see that everyone was having fun and enjoying this experience and being just relaxed and free. That was one of the goals of this event, to just give everyone a chance to have fun and enjoy the night in all good purposes. It was also nice to see that everyone accepted the challenge of learning waltz and that they were not giving up just like that. When giving the money to the PK Vidra, we all felt fullfilled and extremely happy because by having fun and bonding in dance, we just helped someone.
5. Demonstration: The original plan was a dance marathon where people would pay an entrance fee, pick a humanitarian organization, and dance as long as they could. In the end, not a lot of people showed up and we needed to change the plan. The inconveniences we were faced with forced us to accommodate to the situation fast and improvise for the action to be successful. As we had learned a lot through organizing and holding our action, we decided to share our experience during our CAS project through your CAS portfolio as a part of your reflection as it allowed us to deeper reflection on the experience, but it was still available for the public to read.
